A heads-up on showers

Looking to buy a new shower head? There is no shortage of choice and the differences are not always obvious. Here is Bart Walters' potted guide on what to look for....
Start by narrowing your options by deciding what features are important to you. Will you need a handheld shower head for easy manoeuvrability and massage? Or are you considering a low-flow shower head to conserve water and save on your water bill?
Maybe you are looking to try a rain shower head or a downpour shower head and there are variations to choose from.
Top features The top features to look for in a shower head are:
1 Ease of use/installation. Here's a tip … if a guest is going to use your shower for the first time and you have to give them instructions, you probably could have chosen a better shower set up. Look for that marriage of form and function. Choose higher end bathroom fixture manufacturers like Häfele as they will undoubtedly have a greater range of choices.
2 Efficient use of water. Believe it or not, higher end shower heads actually come with a "gallon-per-minute" rating to indicate how efficiently they use water. Compare the rates and you'll see a pretty impressive difference between the lower end models and the nicer ones.
3 Good water pressure. No two houses are exactly alike when it comes to water pressure. Naturally homes with good water pressure work with most shower heads. If your pressure is lower than average, try a rain-can head shower as they create a bit of their own pressure using gravity.
4 Multiple settings. Most people say they don't need all those fancy settings until they have them. Some I've seen can do everything from scale fish to deep tissue massage. Make sure your water pressure is good enough to utilise all functions.
The last step is to decide the finish and style. Will a chrome shower head match with your bathroom decor or is a bronze shower head a better fit? Choose from nickel, brass and more.
Popular choice Manufacturers also specify if it is polished, brushed, oil-rubbed, and the like. Polished chrome shower heads are generally the most popular choice by consumers because they match many existing bathroom styles and are more affordable.
My advice is to choose a good manufacturer who presents multiple product lines like Häfele. You can check out the website at www. hafele.com. From space age modern to art brass, they make it hard to choose. It's important to see a wide variety of styles. But don't forget, it's all about form and function.
